ALN Tanzania enjoys the strategic support of its affiliate offices in Dubai and Kenya, and its Dar es Salaam office has recently doubled its Partner and Directors count.

The Litigation Partner will be leading and managing complex, high-value litigation matters, including representing clients before the High Court, Court of Appeal, and various tribunals. They will be building and mentoring a high-performing legal team, ensuring high standards of client service, and driving the growth of the firm’s litigation practice. The role will be involving strategic business development, maintaining strong client and stakeholder relationships, and collaborating on cross-border disputes with other ALN offices. Additionally, the Partner will be overseeing case management, providing legal opinions, and contributing to knowledge development within the department.

Responsibilities

The litigation practice handles complex and high-value disputes. With a large and multi-office team, we advise on a wide range of contentious matters, including shareholder disputes, contractual claims, insolvency, real estate, environment, intellectual property, white collar crime and fraud, tax, employment, energy and natural resources and regulatory compliance. The team is increasingly advising on cross-border matters and assisting in forensic investigations. We are also experienced in using alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration, mediation and conciliation.

We are seeking a high-calibre Partner with a “can-do” mentality and a proven track record of successfully representing large corporates before the High Court and Court of Appeal on Mainland Tanzania as well as before various tribunals. Admission in Zanzibar would be an added advantage. The role will report to the regional Head of Disputes.

The role is long term, and the successful candidate will be required to:

  • Build and lead a team of ambitious, world-class litigators.
  • Build and market the profile of the Firm as a whole and the litigation team, in particular, to attract and retain top clients and talent.
  • Develop a pipeline of litigation work and refer work as appropriate to other partners.
  • Train and develop capacity amongst more junior team members.
  • Effectively supervise litigation matters to meet our clients’ high expectations and adhere to international best practices, including on response times.
  • Drafting and reviewing pleadings, court documents, and correspondence.
  • Providing legal and commercial advice, including drafting legal opinions.
  • Ensure financial hygiene and good billing and collection of deposit and fees for the litigation team.
  • Build and maintain good networks and relationships with key stakeholders, regulators, and potential work referrers.
  • Develop and actively contribute to the litigation department’s knowledge management.
  • Participate in the review and/or drafting of legislation affecting our clients’ interests and/or the litigation practice.
  • Work collaboratively with other ALN affiliates and offices to support on Tanzanian contentious matters and to grow the cross-border disputes practice.

 

Education and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree with a minimum of Second-Class Upper Division (2:1)
  • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Tanzania

Requirements

  • A minimum of 15 years post-qualification experience in litigation.
  • Demonstrable high integrity and a strong commitment to the firm’s core values and mission as a leading, top-tier law firm.
  • Proven experience working on large-scale projects involving multiple stakeholders, including the Court of Appeal.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Strong ability to organise, prioritise, and effectively communicate progress to Partners, while managing expectations on delivery timelines.
  • Capable of handling matters independently with minimal supervision from the Regional Head of Disputes and/or other Partners.
  • Proficient in the use of IT Systems including Microsoft Office packages.
