Today's post is a bit out of my comfort zone, but nobody is going to die. Here goes nothing....

Women vs Job Opportunities

Are there numerous socio-economic factors that act as blocks when it comes to opportunities in the workplace? Yes

However if we are honest and true to ourselves then you will agree that there also are factors that lie within our control and we intentionally or unintentionally allow them to block our career opportunities

How about we start of with "SELF DOUBT"

Let me give an example.

📌When I reach out to a male candidate with an opportunity, often their response is almost always "Jovitha if the company and compensation are good, I am open to exploring the opportunity"

Conversely, the responses I receive from female candidates will almost always be one of the ones below:

🧐"Mh I dont think I am ready for a managerial position"

😞"I have a friend who knows someone who used to work there, their pay is low and the environment not conducive for growth"

To this I say, why don't you afford yourself a chance to perhaps go for an interview and collect your own findings? People thrive in different environments, and do you know 2 people in the same role may receive different pay based on skills & experience they have to offer and their negotiation skills😉

🤨"Uh Jovitha, after looking at the JD, I am only strong in 70% of the responsibilities and skills required, I can however recommend you to someone else who can"

I would like to point out that the fact that a recruiter is calling you and asking for your availability and willingness to take another role, they have thoroughly looked through your skills, experience and personality and made a judgement call to reach out. How about we normalize leaping? Taking chances and giving it our all, this is what our male counterparts do. Needless to say, besides the many other barriers, this may be the reason we have fewer women at decision making tables, we dont go for challenging opportunities.

📢Well what I am trying to point out here is, Lets give ourselves equal chances, let us intentionally put ourselves out there for opportunities and find better ways to validate our doubts
