Summary

This role functions as an assistant specializing in botany and habitat restoration to support biodiversity and environmental management activities within a large-scale infrastructure project. The Reinstatement Assistant will work with relevant project teams and external consultants to support reinstatement requirements in sections of natural and sensitive habitats as defined by biodiversity management and environmental action plans, on an as-needed basis.

The role involves evaluating habitat restoration activities carried out by contractors, such as topsoil replacement, erosion control, nursery establishment, and ecological monitoring requirements. This is to support the implementation of location-specific restoration plans executed in the field by biodiversity restoration contractors.

Responsibilities

Profile of Role
  • Knowledge of large-scale infrastructure project environmental contexts and right-of-way ecological considerations
  • Experience in habitat restoration or ecological rehabilitation activities, preferably in similar regional environments
  • Qualification: Diploma or graduate degree in botany, ecology, environmental science, or related field
  • Experience as a field botanist or ecological field specialist
  • Understanding of habitat restoration regulatory and environmental compliance requirements

Preparation Activities

  • Understanding of critical habitat assessment processes and associated requirements
  • Knowledge of diverse habitat types affected by linear infrastructure projects
  • Extensive experience with botanical surveys and field ecological assessments

Main Activities

  • Support field biodiversity reinstatement verification surveys along project right-of-way areas
  • Participate in site assessments and identify reinstatement requirements for completed construction areas
  • Support verification of natural regeneration and habitat restoration initiatives in natural, sensitive, and protected habitats
  • Assist in monitoring natural recolonization of flora and fauna within reinstated areas
  • Support collection of restoration performance data, including vegetation cover, species diversity, survival rates, and habitat recovery indicators
  • Monitor and report invasive alien species occurrences and evaluate effectiveness of control measures

Education and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with IFC Performance Standards and related environmental and social frameworks
  • Understanding of critical habitat assessments and associated management plans and systems supporting environmental compliance requirements
  • Experience with environmental monitoring, biodiversity management, and ecological restoration systems

Requirements

  • Diploma or graduate degree in botany, ecology, environmental science, or related field
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in botany, ecology, or conservation-related projects, including support to conservation initiatives
  • Knowledge of and experience with reinstatement and habitat restoration requirements for large-scale infrastructure or development projects
