Commissioning Engineer - Substation Automation
Summary
The Substation Automation Engineer will be responsible for a wide range of technical functions related to the development and engineering of applications for Substation Automation Systems. This includes working with Gateways, Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI), and communication protocols. A strong understanding of SCADA systems, PLCs, structured cabling, microcontrollers, as well as software programming and configuration, is essential for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Establish data exchange between bay-level and station-level.
- Configure and test NCC/CCR interfaces.
- Comply with safety and cybersecurity policies, practices, and procedures.
- Support site organization during installation, pre-commissioning, and commissioning stages, ensuring compliance with quality procedures, work instructions, and processes.
- Prepare for FAT and conduct internal validation, followed by customer FAT/SAT to ensure successful project delivery.
- Analyze and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, and issues related to equipment, providing appropriate solutions.
- Analyze and explain report results to customers and management.
- Actively participate in team initiatives and management meetings to achieve project goals.
- Understand the scope of work, respect time allocation, and ensure full traceability (timesheets, change orders, etc.).
- Support planners, coordinators, and project managers to gain a clear understanding of customer site conditions.
- Provide training for customer maintenance and operational staff.
- Escalate any quality or technical issues detected on-site.
- Utilize all digital tools designed for onsite deployment.
- Advise customers on opportunities to optimize their install base and create lead-generation business opportunities.
Education and Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree in Electronics/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering.
- Certification & accreditation with local professional bodies, ERB, CRB, PMI etc
- EWURA Practicing License or Equivalent
- IT/Networking/Cybersecurity Certificate is an added advantage
Requirements
A minimum of 5 years experience in substation automation projects
Characteristics
- Knowledge in preparing design documents and substation automation configuration/databases for substation automation projects.
- Ability to conduct FAT/SAT in accordance with project specifications.
- Strong experience with IEC61850, IEC-101, IEC-104, and other substation automation communication protocols, including MicroSCADA X, MODBUS, OPC DA/UA, etc.
- Good understanding of Ethernet topologies and various redundancy concepts.
- Ability and willingness to travel across the region.
- Strong customer-oriented mindset.
- Willingness to learn new competencies (technical, digital, soft skills, etc.).
- Collaborative attitude with internal teams (planners, project managers, technical support, etc.).
